Adoptions

Syracuse Adoptions Lawyer

Through adoption, your adopted child will acquire all the same rights that your natural-born children would. He or she will essentially be grafted into your family tree forever, legally speaking. This should be a joyous time in your life. To ensure that this time is not hindered due to the failure to follow all necessary legal processes, reach out to an experienced family lawyer today.

At the law office of Elisabeth A. Barker, Attorney at Law, we have been representing clients for more than 15 years. Attorney Barker, along with experienced support staff, will ensure that your adoption is able to withstand any potential legal challenge. This means that it is executed properly and includes the signatures of the biological mother and father in the proper places.

Private Adoptions Versus Agency Adoptions

At our New York family law firm, we provide supportive legal services to individuals seeking adoption through both the private and agency adoption processes. For years, we have assisted stepparents, grandparents and other relatives to adopt newborns, young children and teenagers through the private adoption process. We compile and complete all necessary paperwork and file for adoption in the county in which the adoptive parents and child reside. We also have assisted birth parents in signing away parental rights and adoption consent forms.

In agency adoptions, our role is slightly different. We offer services to foster parents who are interested in adopting children they have been caring for since those children were placed with the Department of Social Services (DSS).

Interstate Adoptions

The process for an interstate adoption is different from that of a child being adopted by individuals residing in the same state as the child. In an interstate adoption, both states' law must be complied with. The process is initiated in the "sending state," the state in which the child lives, and is finalized in the "receiving state," the state to which the child is being sent to live with the adoptive parents.
