The process for an interstate adoption is different from that of a child being adopted by individuals residing in the same state as the child. In an interstate adoption, both states' law must be complied with. The process is initiated in the "sending state," the state in which the child lives, and is finalized in the "receiving state," the state to which the child is being sent to live with the adoptive parents.
